58% comes from Syrah vineyards grown in the mountainous Chapman Syrah Vineyard of Shenandoah Valley, Amador County. This vineyard is a steep, rocky, decomposed granite vineyard, on the west facing slope. 39% comes from Syrah vineyards grown in the mountainous York Syrah Vineyard of Fiddletown, Amador County. This vineyard is a steep, rocky, volcanic vineyard on the southwest facing slope. 3% Riesling from the Nelson Vineyard is added for mouthwatering complexity. Extremely low yields from these highly stressed mountain vineyards, produce first growth quality fruit. The harvest of 2009 produced a smaller than average crop and grapes came in with small bunches and berry size, allowing for a more extractive vintage.
